A Familiar Spell

Help Fizzle, a Wizard's familiar as they do their best to help fill their master's spell book with all kinds of ridiculously named  incredibly useful spells!

But uh oh! This wizard--of course--be wizardin',  so they're super protective of their spell book! So it's best keep your additions a surprise! Try not to get caught!

Use letter (or arrow) keys to call alchemical symbols, and hold down the space bar to pretend you were innocently loafing on a chair like any other non-meddling cat.

About the Game:

An entry for Pirate Software - Game Jam 15 with the theme of "Shadows and Alchemy"!

It's a short matching (sorta)/puzzle game, that may double as a spell name generator, since focus was on finishing the project vs a massive game experience. It  can be played over and over though (if it doesn't break--apologies for any errors).

Note: I couldn't get around to adding sound.

I figured out sound at the last minute! Sort of?

About Me:

I'm GrinnKitty! I'm an artist who used to think  she might be too dumb & too old to learn  to code games. (SPOILER: I learned that apparently you're never too old  and probably smarter than you give yourself credit for.)

This is my first ever completed entry to a game jam (I've entered some jams but never submitted or finished anything until now, and foolishly stubbornly determined...ly wanted my first game to be something I made myself), so there's plenty I'm celebrating! I'm VERY new to coding, and this project was to test what I've been learning and experimenting with since Feb/March or so.

What I Learned In Boating School Is:

โœจ Return. Functions. That. You. Need. Math. From.
โœจ Inputs are a dumb but necessary evil for video games, and get called from special functions/events in Godot.
โœจ Submit early, and double check dates.
โœจ Gotta tell the computer what stuff is or it will look at me like i'm crazy.
โœจ Arrays are tricky, and might not like me putting things in them and emptying them over and over.   Also I keep forgetting you start at 0. You're so weird Arrays. B-baka.
โœจ Sound probably shouldn't wait until the last minute.

Known Errors/Glitches:

๐Ÿˆ Sometimes inputing recipes will make an error with the input array, I think trying to reference an empty spot. I've only been able to replicate it by repeatedly ducking while the wizard is watching.
๐Ÿˆ Q & E keys don't register at present. (Thanks oneir0mancer)
๐Ÿˆ  Since there's no pause, navigating away from a game in progress has some funky effects >.<;
๐Ÿˆ  Wizard's a bit omnipotent. Some wizards are but maybe not this one; need to tweak the telegraphing/when the wizard can show up a bit.

this was very fun but i cant remember the spells sadly ><! :( i feel like i'd have to write them down on paper, i wonder if a quick flash of the letters to press on the screen under the elements? good job i love the music and everything ><

Thanks for playing!
Someone else mentioned not recalling the spells/elements too, so I'm already planning on adding in a permanent way to show/label the elements to press. Hopefully that helps.

^^ I'm glad you had fun with it! Once I update it, I'd love if you come back and give it a try! Thanks again!

The honking is my absolute favorite part. I died laughing at the "closeup" honk. I never wanted there to be a second space key more than ever. "No, Ms. wizard, I'm not tampering with nothing!"
and then when they gone i be like "Why i gotta make YOUR spells?? Doordash finna be here in 16, and they'll want they orders!! Help me instead of--" but like she come back in the room and I press space

LOL thanks! I'm glad you had fun! ^^

Why did you want another space key? Someone else noted it being a bit annoying that clearing spells and hiding were the same key; did you feel similarly?

Ohhh this Looks so nice. I will Play this later. Also the Screenshots really Look interesting. Did you draw Everything?
I Could relate so much when I read your Description. Im a music composer and I always wanted to learn how to code… how did you start if I may ask?

Good Job on completing a Game!!

(1 edit)

Thanks!! Yeah, I drew everything in Clip Studio Paint! You can learn to code! Music is probably a lot like coding, in a way!

I got my start by trying to replicate mechanic from my favorite games (and failing), and following tutorials on youtube but I didn't really start learning until I took advice to rely on the documentation of what I'm coding in and google search/tutorial on an as-needed basis.

^^ Thanks for your kind words!! I'll check your game out too! I really like the art and the vibe it's got!

thank you very much for Taking the time to answer me.

Maybe I will try to do that as well. :)
